These first two slide shows are from Goliad, TX. One of the early Spanish settlements in Texas and site of a significant battle during the Texas Revolution.

Presidio La Bahia, Goliad, TX

  • Mission Espiritu Santo

Presidio La Bahia, Goliad, Texas. See Wikipedia Article for detailed history. This presidio, or Spanish fort, was founded in 1721 and was moved twice finally ending up near the current city of Goliad. The main purpose of the presidio was the protection of the nearby mission, Mission Nuestra Senora Del Espiritu Santo de Zuniga. This was also the site of a major battle in the Texas fight for independence.

Mission Espiritu Santo, Goliad, TX

Also known as Mission La Bahia and founded in 1722 for the purpose of converting the native Karankawa people of Texas to Christianity. A detailed history of the mission can be found in this Wikipedia Article. This mission, like the Presidio, was also moved a couple of times before coming to its final location near the San Antonio River just outside of Goliad.
